Our primeurs 2022 favourites
As a reminder, the Primeurs are a special sales system in the Bordeaux wine industry. Each year, shortly after the harvest, producers offer wine merchants and specialized critics the opportunity to taste the wines in barrel, still in the process of maturing. This tasting enables them to anticipate the qualitative potential of the wines and predict their evolution in bottle over the years. Critics and professionals then issue notes and comments, which will have an impact on the marketing of the wines once bottled.
Over the past few weeks, we've been lucky enough to take part in several of the 2022 primeur tastings. It's a great opportunity to discover new cuvées, meet passionate winemakers and assess the potential of each wine. Corentin Raynaud, our wine purchasing and châteaux relations manager, and Aymeric de Clouet, a wine expert attached to the Paris Court of Appeal, attended the primeur tastings to identify the most promising wines. Châteaux and wineries opened their doors to us, guiding us through their vineyards and cellars, sharing their expertise and passion for wine with us. After tasting a vast selection of 2022 primeur wines, we were impressed by the quality and diversity of the cuvées. Some wines clearly caught our attention with their unique character, remarkable balance and ageing potential.
Pessac-Léognan
Most of the Pessac-Léognans are remarkable, very successful, and almost everyone will be there for this 2022 vintage. However, we'd like to congratulate Domaine de Chevalier for making a great wine this year, and Chevalier's success lies in making both a great red wine and a great white wine. And that's a difficult feat to pull off, bravo!
Margaux
The Margaux appellation is doing very well this year. We tasted some very good Margaux wines, and were blown away by the wine made by Château Kirwan this year : very pretty, structured and at the same time very fine. We'd also like to salute Château Rauzan-Gassies, which has also produced a very good 2022 vintage : a very pretty wine with a great deal of progress.
Saint-Julien
The 2022 vintage is certainly less homogeneous than previous years within the Saint-Julien appellation. Hats off this year to Château Lagrange, which makes a sumptuous wine in the tradition of recent vintages, but one that sounds like the culmination of the estate's progress in recent years.
Pauillac
In the Pauillac appellation, the tasting was very interesting, despite the gradual disappearance of the good little Pauillacs, all of which have been converted into Grands Crus Classés. We salute the work of Claire Lurton who has made Haut-Bages Libéral a magnificent wine, and who is reaping the rewards of her biodynamic work over the last few years with a pure, truly delicate wine, a charming Pauillac that we really enjoyed.
Saint-Estèphe
This is probably the most homogenous region, with exceptional quality wines, and one château in particular caught our eye : Château Montrose. One of the wines of the vintage in our opinion, and there are many of us who agree on this : Montrose makes a grandiose wine! Really full, with a full mouth and incredible length. We kept the wine on the palate for an extremely long time, with a charming, very delicate aroma, typical of Montrose, but which this year takes on magnificent fullness.
Médoc, Haut-Médoc, Listrac & Moulis
Many of the wines in this selection are being produced for the first time, nature having propelled them to unprecedented heights. We'd like to salute Château Branas Grand Poujeaux, which continues to make progress at Moulis, producing a full-bodied, well-crafted wine of remarkable freshness in 2022. It has managed to establish itself on the Poujeaux plateau as the "best" despite its small size : an achievement after the last 5 years.
Saint-Emilion
Remarkable performance, in the Saint-Emilion appellation, from recent and newly-promoted vintages. Figeac, very great Figeac this year, with magnificent length and precision and a profile unique to Saint-Emilion, with one third Cabernet Franc, one third Cabernet Sauvignon and one third Merlot, as in the traditional Figeac blend. But this year, with depth, concentration and tension, the wine is magnificent.
Pomerol
On the whole, the Pomerol appellation is remarkable, and all the wines are pleasant and successful. We would like to single out Château Beauregard, which makes a wine in the Pomerol style, very concentrated with great depth, but at the same time with an acidity that holds the wine together and lengthens it throughout the tasting. It's a very pretty wine!
Sauternes
The vintage has been very successful in the appellation, and is very likely to be a great year for Sauternes, with dense, rich, deep and well-balanced wines. We adored Château Guiraud, a very strong progression this year with a rich mouthfeel, very citrusy aromas and at the same time very fruity. And then an interminable finish, all tension, sustained by the acidity of the terroir and the way the wine is made, which is truly to be commended this year.
