On April 25, 2023, Château Lagrange celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Japanese group Suntory at the head of the property. This Japanese company, founded in 1899, is the oldest alcoholic beverage manufacturing and distribution company in Japan. The Suntory Group also owns several famous whisky brands, such as Yamazaki, Hibiki and Hakushu.
In 1983, Suntory bought the 3rd Grand Cru Classé 1855 for a "mere pittance": between 9 and 10 million euros. Since Suntory acquired Lagrange from the Cendoya family, who had owned it since 1925, the company has been patiently working to bring this vast Saint-Julien estate back into the limelight, beginning with a thorough restructuring of the vineyard.
After 3 years of construction, this fortieth anniversary was celebrated with enthusiasm. Château Lagrange called upon the first Japanese chef to obtain three Michelin stars in France: Chef Kei Kobayashi. A superb meal was prepared for the 260 guests present for the event with an excellent miso lacquered pigeon accompanied by a great Château Lagrange 1989. In addition, Matthieu Bordes, general manager since 2006 and one of the main actors of the modernization of the property, gave a wonderful speech. An evening to remember!
