Château Smith Haut Lafitte

The Château Smith Haut Lafitte is situated in the commune of Martillac, in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation. It has been classified as a Grand Cru since the Graves wine classification of 1959. The history of this vineyard began in 1365, at the time of the Crusades when the Scottish navigator Georges Smith settled there. Already enjoying certain fame, it produces and exports the estate's wines to the United Kingdom. Mr Duffour-Dubergier, Mayor of Bordeaux, succeeded him to give it the status of Grand Cru. The prestigious Bordeaux trading family, Eschenauer, then bought it and continued to develop it, especially with the construction of an underground cellar able to contain more than 1,000 barrels. In 1990, Florence and Daniel Cathiard, formerly at the head of a large distribution group, really fell in love with the estate. Its magnificent terroir composed of Günzian gravel requires special attention. The couple have since brought the Château's wines up to the highest quality standards thanks to a unique working philosophy: bio-precision. This method combines the best of nature with the best of science. Notable feature: the Château has its own cooper, who shapes the barrels at the Château, tailored to each vintage. The exemplary elegance of the red wines and the sophisticated bouquet of the whites are now helping to spread the fame of the Château Smith Haut Lafitte across the world.
