Château Ferrière

  • Bordeaux

Domain

The estate's name comes from its founder, Gabriel Ferrière, a royal broker in Bordeaux in the 18th century. In 1855, Château Ferrière was classified as a Third Growth. In 1988, the Villars family bought the vineyards and château, taking over the running of the vineyard and winemaking. With 24 hectares of vines, mostly located in the Margaux commune, and its terroir composed of deep Garonne gravel deposited on limestone marl, Château Ferrière is one of the smallest vineyards among the Grands Crus Classés in 1855. The size of its vineyard, combined with the beauty of its terroir, makes Château Ferrière wine a rare and prized product. Claire Villars-Lurton, voted Winemaker of the Year 2024 by RVF, is the driving force behind this revival. Year after year, she works with the utmost finesse to reveal the exceptional terroir of Château Ferrière in her wine, and to restore the vineyard to its original splendor, so that it regains the integrity of its rank. Under his leadership, Château Ferrière has been certified organic since 2015 and doubly certified biodynamic (DEMETER and BIODYVIN label) since 2018. A pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in the Médoc, the château has become the Médoc branch of the MABD (Mouvement de l'Agriculture Biodynamiques) biodynamic movement. Château Ferrière uses viticultural practices that go beyond biodynamics: plant cover, green manures, herbal teas and soil improvers, with the aim of bringing life back to the soil and making the vines more resilient.
