Chris and Suzaan Alheit started Alheit Vineyards in 2010 as a family business. The couple traveled the world together before settling on Hemelrand Farm near Hermanus to pursue their project. Their goal is to make wines that clearly reflect the identity of the Cape, using grapes from old vines, dry farming methods and bush vines. They believe that ordinary grapes can make wonderful wines and want to celebrate and protect the Cape's wine heritage. Hemelrand Farm, perched on the ridge of Hemel & Aarde, is spectacularly beautiful despite the cold winds that often blow through. The sunny days are particularly remarkable. This farm has been transformed into a unique place by Hans and Mary Ann Evenhuis, who have worked to develop it over the past 15 years from scratch.
