Domain

Ovid was founded by Mark Nelson and Dana Johnson; they produced their first vintage in 2005. The domain’s name comes from Mark’s company that he had founded in the 1980s called Ovid Technologies. He sold his company in 1998 and purchased the property with his wife. The domain is located in the Pritchard Hill wine region but has no official designation. This area is considered to be one of the best grape-growing areas in the Napa Valley. In 2017, a large part of the domain was sold to the Duncan family, the owners of Silver Oak and Twomey wineries. Pritchard Hill is one of the rockiest areas in the Napa Valley, so the vineyard sits on volcanic soils that were created around three to nine million years ago. The winery is quite small and can only hold two vintages at a time. The domain produces only four different red wines, but each year they also produce a selection of experimental wines.
