Dear Wine Enthusiasts,
U.S. President Donald Trump has recently threatened to impose a 200% tax on imports of wine, champagne, and other alcoholic beverages from the European Union, in response to a 50% tax that the EU is considering on American whiskey.
This announcement has sparked strong reactions from French wine producers. Florence Cathiard, owner of Château Smith Haut Lafitte in Bordeaux, hopes this threat is merely a strategic move. She emphasizes that such taxes would make French wines unaffordable for American consumers, effectively closing a key market for French exporters.
The U.S. market accounts for approximately €4 billion per year in French wine and spirits exports. The implementation of these taxes could therefore have significant consequences for our industry.
At U’Wine, we are closely monitoring this situation and remain committed to bringing you the finest wines while navigating this complex international landscape.
Best regards,
The U’Wine Team.
