Château Haut-Bages Libéral

  • Bordeaux

Domain

The history of Château Haut-Bages Libéral began in the 18th century with the Libéral family, founders of the estate. Over the years, the owners succeeded in bringing together the best terroirs of Pauillac, enabling them to achieve the rank of Cinquième Cru Classé in 1855. Since 1983, the Villars family, and Claire Villars-Lurton in particular, have been at the helm of the estate. Voted Winemaker of the Year 2024 by the Revue du Vin de France, Claire Villars-Lurton has been engaged in regenerative and sustainable viticulture since the early 2000s. She has put biodynamic viticulture and agroforestry at the heart of her practices, always with the aim of bringing life back to the soil and making the vines more resilient. Since 2009, the team has been experimenting with organic and biodynamic farming practices. The estate has been certified organic since 2019 and biodynamic since 2021 (DEMETER, in the vineyards). The 30-hectare vineyard overlooks the Gironde estuary in the heart of the Pauillac appellation. Half the vineyard is adjacent to Château Latour and benefits from gravelly soil. The other half is located on the Bages plateau, where the proximity of the estuary gives the vineyard a unique soil typicity thanks to the presence of clay-limestone. This exceptional terroir, combined with the highest standards of human care, produces powerful, full-bodied wines with rich black fruit aromas and a mineral character that reinforces their uniqueness.
